High school juniors won t need to pass MCAS to graduate in 2022

High school juniors won t need to pass MCAS to graduate in 2022 By Katie Lannan State House News Service This year s high school junior class will not need to take or pass MCAS tests in order to graduate, under a change approved last week by the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. The move is one of a series of pandemic-influenced shifts the state has made within its standardized testing program since COVID-19 first shuttered school buildings last spring. Students are typically required to pass 10th grade English and math MCAS exams in order demonstrate competency in the two subjects and graduate. Last year s 10th graders, the class of 2022, did not have an opportunity to take those tests last spring because education officials obtained a federal waiver and legislative approval to cancel the spring 2020 MCAS administration in the early days of remote learning.

I am elated, Manyanga said. We already have so much stress coming back to school. Everyone felt like there had been a weight lifted. MCAS testing would have fallen at the same time as advanced placement testing, which many juniors take part in, and most have already sat for the SATs and ACTs as of April. Manyanga said while happy, she hoped in the future more students at the district level would be able to weigh in on these decisions that affect them directly.  Everyone has something to say, Manyanga said, adding most students in Billerica respond to opinion emails and polls when it comes to their education especially during the last year.

Wicked Local Social activism has always been a part of the evolution of the United States, but now more than ever before the action and information of these movements is accessible to the public, particularly youths. That is why two sixth-grade English teachers at Cyril D. Locke Middle School in Billerica made the decision to put activism into students hands through a recent writing assignment. Megan Hanafin and Jessica Murphy jumped into the 2020-21 school year much like the middle school students they have in their classrooms. They re new to the grade and like everyone in the district new to tackling hybrid learning.
