Jordan Banks, nine, was seriously injured on playing fields in Blackpool last Tuesday.
At a hearing at Blackpool Town Hall on Monday, coroner Alan Wilson formally opened the inquest into his death.
Mr Wilson said: “Jordan is said to have been participating in a football coaching session on School Road football field when he was said to have been struck by lightning.”
He said Jordan was taken by ambulance to Blackpool Victoria Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly before 6pm.
The coroner said the court had been told Jordan’s death was due to being struck by lightning and it was not felt necessary for a post mortem to be carried out.

A TRAGIC nine-year-old boy died in hospital an hour after he was struck by lightning as he played football, an inquest heard today.
Jordan Banks, 9, was taking part in a one-on-one training session in a field in Blackpool when the horror unfolded on Tuesday.

An inquest was today opened and adjourned into his tragic death.
The hearing was told Jordan was hit by lightning during a thunderstorm at 5pm.
He was declared dead in hospital an hour later.
Blackpool Coroner s Court was told a post-mortem was not carried out as a paediatrician gave his cause of death as being struck by lightning.

The inquest into a nine-year-old boy s death has been told he died as a result of being struck by lightning while playing football, a coroner has said.
Jordan Banks was fatally injured while participating in a football coaching session on playing fields in Blackpool on 11 May, coroner Alan Wilson told a hearing at Blackpool Town Hall.
He said the court had been told the death was due to a lightning strike.
The hearing was adjourned ahead of a full inquest at the court on 21 July.
