The Brooke County Commission purchased the properties last year in hopes of establishing a new ambulance station there. WELLSBURG The Brooke County Commission, Tuesday, received an update on construction of the new Ohio River bridge and agreed to hire a new inspector for dilapidated structures, illegal salvage yards and overgrown yards. Brooke County Sheriff Rich Beatty told the commission officials with the Flatiron Corp., the Broomfield, Colo. company building the span, hope on April 20 to move the bridge’s 830 foot long mainspan from the assembly yard near the Wellsburg Smith Oil, where it has been built, to its permanent site about a mile south of the city.

Eric Fithyan, president of the Wellsburg Kiwanis Club, said the group is accepting items from individuals and groups for inclusion in a time capsule to be buried near an area of the Brooke County Pioneer Trail behind the Smith Oil station just south of Wellsburg. He noted the site is not far from the temporary work area where crews with the Flatiron Corp. of Broomfield, Colo. have been building the 830-foot-long main span for the bridge.

Staff writer Warren Scott BRIDGE DISCUSSED Wellsburg resident Walter Ferguson reflected on efforts in 2003 by the Ohio River Bridge Task Force and the Brooke-Hancock-Jefferson Metropolitan Planning Commission in garnering support for the span now under construction. Ferguson shared a video commissioned by the group in which community and business leaders commented on its anticipated benefits. WELLSBURG A long-time supporter of a new Ohio River bridge near Wellsburg reflected on efforts to generate support for the span while stressing the need for it. Walter Ferguson said while working as an electrical contractor at American Electric Power’s Cardinal Plant in Brilliant, he often reflected on how it took him 35 to 40 minutes to reach a workplace he could see from his Wellsburg home.
