Hundreds being vaccinated daily at SUNY Potsdam COVID site; appointments pushed out to April

Opened Jan. 18, the state-run vaccination center will enter its third week of operation on Monday. Coming from the hamlet of Plessis in the town of Alexandria Thursday afternoon, James H. Mercer said he was initially doubtful about how organized the site would be. He said he signed up for an appointment about two weeks ago and drove more than 60 miles to St. Lawrence County. “It was smooth as hell,” Mr. Mercer said, patting his arm with satisfaction, after a roughly 20-minute process inside SUNY Potsdam’s Maxcy Hall. Of New York’s 13 state-run points of dispensing, or PODs, seven currently have appointment availability through mid-April. Earlier this week and into Friday morning, only SUNY Potsdam and Plattsburgh International Airport were accepting appointments, but by late Friday afternoon, the state’s online eligibility and appointment portal updated availability at SUNY Albany, the New York State Fairgrounds, Westchester County Center, SUNY Stony Brook

(Enterprise photo — Connie Martelle) New York state expanded COVID-19 vaccine eligibility to everyone over 65 years old more than two weeks ago. Ever since, many local seniors have reported having trouble scheduling an appointment to get vaccinated. The challenges seniors say they’re facing vary. Some aren’t familiar with the internet, some are logging on to pharmacy websites only to find no appointments available, others have called vaccine hotlines and found the line busy, while others have reported having difficulty finding transportation to get to vaccine appointments.

COVID-19 Vaccine: What s the Deal?

New York State officials are hopeful they will get more COVID vaccine later this week. They have already administered 88 percent of the doses they have received. The city is expecting 107,825 resupply doses this week. NYC will have the capacity to vaccinate 500,000 people per week, the mayor said, once supplies are replenished.   250,000 doses are on their way to New York State this week with New York City allotted 107,000 of those doses. Mass vaccination sites were set to open this week, but NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio confirmed Monday that the openings are now on hold. When it comes to other sites, like the state-run Javits Center, there are some appointments still available, but very few considering current demand and the pace at which the state has been vaccinating New Yorkers.  Also, SUNY Potsdam Field House and Plattsburgh International Airport still have appointments available.
