The theologian who participated in the Second Vatican Council, was a critic of the doctrine on papal infallibility and his authorization to teach Catholic theology was revoked in 1979. Leading tributes to the theologian German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier called Küng an enduring role model as a scholar, a brilliant thinker with a sharp mind, who was at the same time an alert political observer and a committed fellow citizen.
