A Clare TD has expressed concern at the lack of independent living for many disabled people in Ireland.
Today marks the European Independent Living Day which is an opportunity to express solidarity and celebrate all of the efforts of those who have championed the right to Independent Living and who have fought, and continue to fight, for the overall equality of Disabled People in society.
Sinn Féin TD Violet-Anne Wynne, who sits on the Disability Matters Oireachtas Committee, has reiterated her concerns in relation to the number of people aged under 65 who are residing in nursing homes and residential care across the country due to lack of proper community supports.

YOUNGER PEOPLE IN nursing homes have “wasted lives”, according to a new report from the Ombudsman.
Peter Tyndall has published a report about an investigation into the placement of people under 65 in nursing homes.
There are more than 1,300 people in this situation, according to the HSE. One-fifth of these are under 50.
The Ombudsman held 28 visits with people directly affected by this issue and spoke with representative groups.

“I’m not going to say it is paradise and I’m not going to say it’s hell. But it is very difficult,” Charles replied when asked to describe life in the nursing home he entered when he was only 51.
He is one of 1,300 people under 65 living in residential care Ireland at present, and a group of them who recently spoke to the Ombudsman Peter Tyndall all said they wanted to live at home.
Their experiences are contained in his report, ‘Wasted Lives: Time for a better future for younger people in nursing homes’, published today (May 5).

Younger people are living “wasted lives” in nursing homes due to a lack of State support, according to an investigation by the Ombudsman.
In his report “Wasted Lives: Time for a better future for younger people in nursing homes” published today, Peter Tyndall said “systemic issues” and a “fractured funding model” had left hundreds of people confined to the homes, often against their wishes.
There are more than 1,300 people under the age of 65 living in nursing homes in Ireland, according to the HSE.
The Ombudsman investigation into the placement of younger people in nursing homes was launched following several complaints. Mr Tyndall carried out 28 visits with people directly affected and spoke with representative groups.

European Commission investigators said the country s systems for controlling and sanctioning compliance with the rules were unsatisfactory . They have imposed a concrete and specific package of measures to address the failures, including eye-watering penalties.
