Select Page COVID-19 outbreak means Sturgeon Landing residents will have to wait to participate in Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation election An outbreak of COVID-19 in one of its communities has somewhat scuttled plans for the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation election. The election is scheduled for Tuesday but the outbreak in the community of Sturgeon Landing means voters will not be able to cast ballots there. Chief Electoral Officer Burke Ratte said this means the results for chief and the Sturgeon Landing council position will be delayed. “On April 13, we will only be able to tally the councillor results for each other respective community where the polling stations are open,” he said.

Rising case numbers lead Pelican Narrows back to lockdown

Pelican Narrows is under lockdown conditions after another surge in COVID-19 cases. The lockdown was first announced Feb. 19 by Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation councillor Weldon McCallum via social media, going back into effect as of 10 p.m. Feb. 21. The community has seen an uptick in COVID-19 cases in recent weeks, going from active cases in the low 10s to as high as 53 cases as of Feb. 22 according to numbers released by the local Angelique Canada Health Centre.
