Vera Stanton tripped over a low wall alongside a path at The Leys School in Cambridge. She hit her head and died from her injuries six days later. Through its advocate Prashant Popat, The Leys and St Faith’s Schools of The Fen Causeway, pleaded guilty to the charge of failing in its undertakings to ensure people other than employees were not exposed to risk to their health and safety.

Epping man convicted after hindering probe into illegal waste

A building contractor has been convicted after failing to provide assistance to a criminal investigation. Raymond Burling, of Hemnall Street, Epping, came to the attention of the Environment Agency looking into the illegal dumping of bales of mixed waste at a warehouse in Kent. Information obtained by investigating officers led them to believe Burling was likely to hold documents that would help the wider enquiry. The agency wrote to the then 70-year-old in August last year, asking him to supply the papers. Peterborough Magistrates were told Burling had two weeks to respond to the letter, but did not make any contact with officers.

David Fairbairn of Ermine Way in Arrington returned to Parkside Police Station, Cambridge, on bail yesterday. He has since been charged with five counts of possession of firearms and driving while disqualified.
