Petersburg School District to open a special education preschool

Petersburg School District will open a preschool this fall. It will be the only pre-K school run by the school district and will focus on special education students but other students will be able to enroll as well.
There are already a few preschools in Petersburg run by different non-profits. But the school district hasn’t run a preschool until now. The new school will be housed inside the Rae C. Stedman Elementary building. It will be free for special education students ages three to five but will also enroll other non-special ed students for a fee.

Honor music students in Southeast Alaska combine solo recordings in lieu of in-person festival

Many high school music students in Southeast Alaska cannot practice or perform together this year due to COVID protocols. Some music classes, which are normally large in size, have been canceled altogether. But that hasn’t stopped the annual Southeast Honor Music Festival from taking some shape. Instead of meeting in person, virtual band and choir performances were created for the first time.

One of the most controversial issues the Petersburg School District covers every year is the school calendar. One of the ideas on the table is splitting the week-long spring break into several breaks and another is having a four-day school week instead of the traditional five days.
School boards approve calendars every spring for the next school year so it’s not unusual that the local school board is talking about it in January. There are a lot of factors to consider says, Superintendent Erica Kludt-Painter.
