Clark is UGA’s second Churchill Scholar. The scholarship, which was first awarded in 1963, is given to 15 students each year after a rigorous application and interview process. Churchill Scholars attend Churchill College, the only college at the University of Cambridge to specialize in science and technology. The award covers full tuition, a stipend, travel costs and the chance to apply for a $2,000 special research grant.

Shooting of 2 teens in east Athens remains unsolved

Athens-Clarke police said Friday they continue to search for leads to identify a person who shot and wounded two teens Jan. 21 in east Athens. Both 18-year-olds were shot shortly before 3 p.m. along Highland Park Drive, a street off Cedar Shoals Drive, according to a police report. Police were dispatched to a home off nearby Crows Nest Court, where the pair had run to find help. One teen from Winterville had a bullet wound to his abdomen, while the other had a wound in his leg. The wounds were not life threatening and both were transported to Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center.

A Porterdale resident was hurt after her vehicle collided with a dump truck in Walton County. It happened shortly after 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20. The collision blocked both eastbound lanes of U.S. 78 between Loganville and Monroe. A 2020 Chevrolet Malibu traveling eastbound on the four-lane highway struck the rear passenger side of a 2018 Kenworth dump truck which was turning onto Youth-Monroe Road. An axle from the dump truck became detached and struck the front left side of a 2018 Ford Explorer.

Pregnant Lavonia woman killed in one-vehicle crash in Athens Alana Elise Barnes, 27, who was 15 weeks pregnant, died along with her child, police said. Barnes also had four young children, according to her father, Alton Barnes of Monroe. The driver, Clinton Jester, 37, suffered superficial injuries to his face, but was released following treatment at Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center. The wreck occurred shortly after 9:30 a.m. near the Nowhere Road intersection, when the 2007 Chevrolet Trail Blazer traveling north ran a red light at the traffic signal at Hull Road. Police said the SUV went off the roadway and traveled about 150 feet until it hit a tree on the front passenger side, then rotated clockwise and came to rest about 40 feet past the tree, police said.
