Albemarle County Office of Housing and the Piedmont Housing Alliance have signed a memorandum of understanding to award project-based vouchers to Piedmont Housing for multifamily housing included in Phase 1 of the Southwood community’s redevelopment.
These vouchers will allow Piedmont Housing to be more competitive when applying for Low-Income Housing Tax Credit funding, making the project more financially feasible for Piedmont Housing and more accessible to lower-income community members.

ALBEMARLE Co., Va. (WVIR) - Albemarle County is trying to make multifamily housing more accessible through a federal program.
As the Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville prepares for a $250 million redevelopment of the Southwood community, there is a new effort to expand affordable housing opportunities.
“We see the Southwood development, and our small part in it, as a way to kind of meet that goal of ensuring that people have a safe, secure place to live that’s affordable to them,” said Phil Holbrook, the housing program manager at Albemarle County’s Office of Housing.

The City of Charlottesville, in collaboration with Cultivate Charlottesville-Food Justice Network, has launched a 24/7 Food Security Text Line in English and Spanish to provide direct food resource information to residents of the city and surrounding counties.
In March 2020, the Food Justice Network mobilized to provide communication tools and food access resources to address operational and programmatic changes due to the pandemic shutdown and shelter in place orders.
The Division for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion hopes that this event provides space for both community connection and economic investment back into the organizations serving Charlottesville residents.

SCOTTSVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Volunteers in Scottsville are stepping up to the plate for friends and neighbors.
The Piedmont Housing Alliance (PHA) put out an urgent call for help, looking for volunteers to run errands for elderly and disabled people at the Scottsville School Apartments. PHA Community Services Coordinator Michael Monaco says, so far, the response is great, but the alliance needs more help.
“With everyone quarantining, it becomes even more important to try and help seniors get access to necessary things like medicine and groceries without endangering them and without asking them to put themselves in danger or leave the house at a time when that’s not safe,” Monaco said.
