Funeral provider Dignity has swung to a full-year loss despite the pandemic sending Britain’s annual death toll soaring to its highest level for more than 100 years.
The group said UK deaths surged 14% to 663,000 in 2020 – the highest since 1918, which witnessed the end of the First World War and the Spanish Flu pandemic.
But Dignity still reported pre-tax losses of £19.6 million for the year to December 25, against profits of £44.1 million the previous year as coronavirus restrictions impacted upon its services.
On an underlying basis, pre-tax profits slumped 19% to £30.7 million.
Dignity – the UK’s only listed funeral provider – said it suffered immense stresses on its operations as the deaths jumped nearly 50% higher between April and June in the peak of the first wave.
