PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) Â Former Phoenix city councilman, Vice Mayor, and civil rights leader Calvin C. Goode has died at 93.
Goode came from humble beginnings, working for the Phoenix Union High School District before being elected as an at-large representative to the Phoenix City Council in 1972. Goode was the second African American to ever serve on the city council.
Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego called Goode an extraordinary man in a statement released Wednesday. Former Phoenix District 8 Councilmember and Vice Mayor Calvin Goode was an extraordinary man and someone I feel quite privileged to have known. His kindness and generosity were legendary, as was his commitment to Phoenix, to his brothers and sisters in the African American community, and to education. The cityâs highest recognition for civil rights work is named in his honor, as is one of our buildings in the downtown city core. PHOENIX (AP) - Arizona civil rights leader Calvin C. Goode, who spent more than two decades on the Phoenix City Council fighting to improve the low-income Black neighborhoods he represented, died Wednesday, his family said.
Goode died at age 93 of an illness unrelated to COVID-19, the family said in a statement.
During his tenure, Goode often disagreed with other council members, voting in the 1980s against freeway expansion projects he argued would destroy neighborhoods.
Goode was the second Black American to serve as Phoenix’s city councilman, for a record 22 consecutive years.
Today we lost a living legend. His legacy will live beyond us all. Truly an honor to have called Vice Mayor Calvin C.Goode a mentor, friend, and leader. https://t.co/WGHQWV30uJ
The Oklahoma native was initially denied the high school experience in Arizona due to his race. He earned a Master’s degree from Arizona State University and worked 30 years for the Phoenix Union High School District. He also owned his own tax-accounting business.
Goode was dubbed the “conscience” of the Phoenix City Council because his efforts addressed disadvantaged youth, empowering minority-owned businesses, fighting discrimination and improving impoverished areas of the community.

Valley school districts work to decide how to move forward in pandemic
Arizona school districts are working to find solutions to online and in-person learning as families navigate the ever-changing landscape of the pandemic.
PHOENIX - School districts across the Valley are meeting for the last time this year, deciding on school closures and when to allow kids back on campus for in-person learning next year.
It seems every district is taking a different approach and no school district has the same closure plan and time frame. Every district in the Valley has also decided on different schedules.
