HAMBURG, N.Y. The Erie County Fair may be a couple of months away yet, but judging for its 2021 Home Brew and Cider competitions are already complete.
A panel of judges recently sampled submissions in accordance with nationally recognized Beer Judge Certification Program protocols and USACM Cider Style Guidelines.
The Best in Show Home Brew is a German pale ale brewed with noble hops and light pilsner malt brewed by Rick Felser. Felser recommends pairing the beer with a sausage sandwich at the Fair.

Longtime New Hampshire brewer Paul Davis will be remembered during a memorial at Stark Brewing on April 23, 2021.
MANCHESTER, NH –The New Hampshire craft brewing community is remembering the life and career of Paul Davis, a member of the “old guard” who helped kickstart the craft brewing scene in the state 25 years ago, mentored dozens of local brewers, helped found the New Hampshire Brewers Association and led the charge to promote Granite State beers.
Davis, 53, died last Friday after ongoing health complications were compounded by a COVID-19 diagnosis.
The community raised about $9,500 to help his family with medical bills while he was in the hospital for nearly seven weeks. Stark Brewing Company owner Peter Telge said the money will be used to pay for Davis’s funeral expenses and the remainder will be used to start a trust in his 12-year-old daughter’s name.
Easy to find and locally made, Laughing Monk has grown from homebrew to regional staple
Laughing Monk brews in San Francisco and sells locally.
Since the pandemic has limited the number of opportunities to leave the house over the past year, I’ve taken the opportunity to drive around visiting local breweries as a way to spend a couple hours on a Saturday afternoon. One of my favorite Bay Area breweries during this time has been Laughing Monk Brewing, launched by homebrewers Andrew Casteel and Aaron Hicks in 2016 in San Francisco’s Bayview neighborhood.
Laughing Monk’s creative varieties of Belgian brews, lagers, pale ales and IPAs – both West Coast and hazy styles – are consistently flavorful and well made. (Another new favorite is Santa Cruz’s New Bohemia Brewing Co. – read more about it next month.)
