GRAND HAVEN, Mich. â The Board of Light and Power SIMS Plant, located on Harbor Island in Grand Haven, has been demolished.
The smokestack was knocked down at 8 a.m. Friday.
A crowd of people gathered to watch as it was knocked down.
The Grand Haven Department of Public Safety has provided a map depicting a 1,400-foot safe zone, adding that it includes the farmers market and Chinook Pier. They advise everyone to refrain from entering that perimeter.
Weâre told those in the near vicinity may seek shelter at Lynn Sherwood Waterfront Stadium and that the parking lot at the Grand Haven Municipal Marina will be closed.

One of the three remaining buildings scheduled to be taken down from the former Sims site came down around 9 a.m. Friday, signifying the first of multiple planned explosive demolitions to raze the Harbor Island coal plant.
The scrubber building, located in between the smokestack and the unit 3 boiler house, was the first building to come down. There was a three- and one-minute countdown before viewers along the waterfront near Waterfront Stadium saw the building come down, accompanied by a loud explosion.

GRAND HAVEN, Mich. â Police responded to a domestic disturbance in the area of Sheldon Road and Arlington Avenue in Grand Haven this afternoon.
A 17-year-old resident of the home had assaulted two members of his family, according to the Grand Haven Department of Public Safety.
Police say they found the suspect in a bedroom with a knife to his throat, adding that the suspect rushed at the officers with the knife after a taser was ineffectively deployed.
Weâre told police left the room and slammed the door, leading to a standoff and crisis negotiations. The suspect reportedly surrendered at around 7 p.m.

OTTAWA COUNTY, MI – A Grand Haven psychologist had his license suspended for at least three years after he had a sexual relationship with a patient, state officials said.
William Peter Kooistra, 57, was sentenced last year in Grand Haven District Court to 45 days in jail after he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of attempted fourth-degree criminal-sexual conduct.
He was also ordered to pay nearly $10,000 in fines, costs and restitution.
