Hazel Jackson, Leon Buddy Glover, Barack Obama among nominees for renaming Lancaster schools

Hazel Jackson, Leon ‘Buddy’ Glover and Barack Obama are among the names School District of Lancaster is considering to rename two of its schools. The school district’s 15-member renaming committee this week unveiled five options for Southeast Middle School, formerly Edward Hand Middle School, and seven for Buchanan Elementary School. It’s the latest development in a process that started last summer to rename up to five Lancaster schools to reflect the district’s values today. The school board began by stripping Edward Hand Middle School of its name in June 2020, after community members pushed for the removal of the former Revolutionary War general and slave owner’s name from the school.

Locals Finalists For Louisiana Student Of The Year

mcschools.net BATON ROUGE, La. – Today the Louisiana Department of Education released the names of 21 students selected as finalists in the state’s annual Students of the Year competition. The 21 students selected include one elementary, middle and high school student from each of the state’s seven regions. The finalists represent traditional public, public charter and nonpublic schools. The finalists will participate in a virtual ceremony on April 21, when the winners will be announced for each grade level.  “I’m proud of each of these finalists and would be honored to have any of them represent us as a Louisiana Student of the Year,” said State Superintendent of Education Dr. Cade Brumley. “Their achievements and hard work are proof that Louisiana’s children are as capable as any in the nation.” Public and nonpublic schools were asked to submit one candidate from their student body.

Rutherford County School Board approves Plainview Elementary zone

Plainview Elementary will open in August with an estimated 396 students living in the southeast part of the county in a zone with room for growth, school officials decided Tuesday. Prior to the unanimous vote, the Rutherford County Board of Education did hear from two Barfield Elementary mothers in the Stevens Bend subdivision who wanted to keep their children at their current school instead of sending them to Plainview Elementary. It’s kind of heartbreaking to be forced out of that, Katrina Gray said. Our kids should still be allowed to go to Barfield, said Lacee Godman, adding that Stevens Bend is much closer to their existing school than Plainview.

An icon : NAACP to celebrate Hazel Jackson, the first Black teacher at School District of Lancaster

In the words of Jackson’s granddaughter, Amber Holland, “She was sadly mistaken.” Jackson spent years calling to inquire about job openings, submitting applications and offering recommendations — all while working the assembly line at the former RCA Lancaster Tube Plant on New Holland Avenue. But there was one step in the application process that constantly caused her issues: the photograph. When school officials noticed from her picture that she was a Black woman, they’d reject her application, Holland said. Eventually, Jackson took another approach. Every Friday, she spent the day sitting in the superintendent’s office, waiting for her opportunity to come. And, in 1961, it did.
