Steven Bingler, founder and president of planning and design practice Concordia, outlines his organization s principles for what he calls Community CoDesign, a set of values aimed at developing a collaborative and empathic approach to placemaking to address the growing complexities of climate change, public health, endemic poverty, social inequities and other challenges of the 21st century. Here is a selection of photos I shot for DeSmog in 2019, another year when arguably not enough collective action was taken to protect the planet from global warming.
Throughout 2019 the Trump administration continued to roll back environmental standards. Meanwhile, advocacy groups and activists ramped up the battle for clean air and water and a livable climate.
Greta Thunberg, the Swedish teen who inspired the school climate strikes movement, visited New York in September, inspiring millions worldwide to take to the streets calling for climate action.
Yet in Louisiana and the Ohio Valley, the petrochemical industry, fed by fracked natural gas, has continued to expand, moving the U.S. further away from preventing catastrophic impacts from climate change.

Galactic returns to the road next month with featured vocalist Anjelika ‘Jelly’ Joseph for a series of seven socially distanced outdoor concerts. The New Orleans-based funk band will be supported by The Heavy Hours over the course of the run.
The jaunt is currently scheduled to begin at Riverfront Live in Cincinnati on May 14. Galactic then heads to Live From The Lot in Peoria, Illinois on May 15 and The Big Top in St. Louis on May 16.

Next up is a show at Vinoski Winery in Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania on May 18. The band then plays Frederick, Maryland’s Showtime At The Drive In on May 20 and Devils Backbone Brewing Company in Roseland, Virginia on May 21. Galactic closes out the run with a previously announced show at Shakori Hills Grassroots Festival Of Music & Dance in Pittsboro, North Carolina on May 22.

Acme Oyster Co. ends this week. The New Orleans-based seafood restaurant will open this Saturday, April 10, at 11 am a representative tells CultureMap. Acme has claimed Montrose s historic Tower Theater (1201 Westheimer Rd.), formerly the site of El Real Tex-Mex Cafe, for its first Texas outpost. The two-story space has received a comprehensive makeover, including a fresh coat of Acme-red paint on the outside. Acme traces its roots back to 1910 and has occupied its present location since 1924. In addition to its home in the French Quarter, the restaurant operates Louisiana locations in Baton Rouge and Metairie; in Gulf Shores, Alabama; and Miramar Beach, Florida.
