New Orleans mayor urges extreme caution for holiday gatherings due to COVID-19

“This is our most critical time, period,” New Orelans Mayor LaToya Cantrell said. Author: WWL Staff Updated: 2:27 PM CST December 23, 2020 NEW ORLEANS New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell says residents should use “extreme caution” when celebrating the holidays this week as COVID-19 hospitalizations and death continue to rise. The mayor said, while difficult, the safest way to celebrate is by only gathering with your immediate household. Cantrell also warned that due to the rising percentage of tests returning COVID-19 positive, it is possible that bars and breweries could be closed as early as next week. “This is our most critical time, period,” Cantrell said. “I strongly urge our residents and visitors to do everything possible to prevent the spread of COVID-19.”

Will Sutton: Lauren Daigle needs an apology lesson, and Mayor Cantrell shouldn t cry wolf | Columnist Will Sutton

Lauren Daigle and New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell need to say more, not less. There was a Cantrell-Daigle meeting. The mayor issued a letter written to Dick Clark Productions asking that Lafayette native Christian singer Daigle not be included in the New Orleans-hosted “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2021” scheduled for ABC. Louisiana Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser accused the mayor of messing up a good thing. Clearly upset, he yanked $500,000 dedicated to finance the Louisiana part of the production. Proving money can be found when something is important enough, the New Orleans Tourism and Cultural Fund board quickly approved spending $500,000 to see that the show goes on. Meanwhile, Dick Clark Productions representatives said Daigle had never been scheduled, and Daigle weighed in with something short of an apology.

Report from Louisiana: NOLA Mayor attacks Christian Singer Lauren Daigle

Report from Louisiana: NOLA Mayor attacks Christian Singer Lauren Daigle By:  Pat Austin SHREVEPORT – As Louisiana politicians go, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell is on her way to being as infamous as any of them. Cantrell has come under criticism for her harsh economic restrictions in response to Covid-19 in New Orleans compared to the rest of the state.  She has placed stringent restrictions on high school athletic events which likely contributed to the Louisiana High School Football Playoffs relocating their games from the Superdome in New Orleans to Natchitoches, Louisiana at Northwestern State University.  Her tough occupancy restrictions for the Superdome would not enable many fans in the stadium; conditions are more favorable in Natchitoches; this move will cost New Orleans a chunk of tourism dollars from the multiday event.

Rockin New Year s Eve Back On In New Orleans, Sans Lauren Daigle

On Friday, the Orleans Tourism and Cultural Fund voted 5-1 to cover the half-a-million-dollar bill so New Orleans can have its spot on the national stage as the countdown for the entire central time zone. “This was going to be in agreement and a funding in partnership with the state. That has changed,” Board President Lisa Alexis said. Of course, what Alexis is referring to is the fact that Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser pulled all $500,000 of the funding to stage the event after New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell said she didn t want Lauren Daigle to perform. Oh, by the way, Daigle is the ambassador for Nungesseer s Tourism campaign, the Sunshine Plan. The Lt. Governor says that without Daigle and her fan base, he wasn t getting the best bang for the taxpayer s buck.
