SANDWICH After months of delay, the public comment period for the proposed Town Neck Beach renourishment project by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is open.
Michael Riccio, study manager for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers New England District, initially told the Board of Selectmen in October that the public comment period would be open by the end of the month. The 30-day period instead opened March 4 and will run until April 3.
The Section 111 Shore Damage Mitigation Study proposes to restore a barrier beach and dune system by using approximately 388,000 cubic yards of beach-compatible material that would be dredged, pumped and graded onto Town Neck Beach from a nearshore borrow site adjacent to Scusset Beach.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District has presented latest update on the Muddy River Flood Risk Management project.
According to the Army Corps, dredging activities continue to progress on Phase 2 of the $36.5 million Muddy River project in Boston and Brookline, Massachusetts.
“Beginning today, March 10, 2021, work will progress to Work Area #13 in the vicinity of Fenway and Agassiz Road (at the Boston Fire Department building). Temporary construction fencing will be installed in Work Area #13 to prepare the area for mobilization of dredging equipment,” said USACE in the update.

Great Lakes Dredge and Dock (GLDD) has won a $61.8 million firm-fixed-price contract for rock blasting, removal and dredging in Boston Harbor.
Bids were solicited via the internet with four received, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) said in its latest announcement.
According to DoD, work will be performed in Boston, Massachusetts, with an estimated completion date of November 8, 2022.
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District, is the contracting activity.
Boston Harbor is New England’s largest port serving as the principal distribution point for the export and import of commerce for Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont.
2 CONCORD, Mass. (Feb. 9, 2021) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District received a permit application from Soundwaters, Inc., for proposed work in waters of Long Island Sound offshore of Stamford, Connecticut.
The proposed work involves the installation of lines, buoys, anchors and regulatory aids to navigation for the cultivation of a winter crop of native sugar kelp/seaweed (Saccarina lattissima). The proposed gear area is located approximately 3,200 feet southwest of Stamford Ledge Light and 4,000 feet northeast of red nun “34” at South Reef/Woolsey Rock.
The Corps of Engineers is soliciting comments from members of the public; federal, state and local agencies; Indian Tribes; and other interested parties to consider and evaluate the impacts of this proposed activity.
