Having duly wrapped up the opening round of pre-budget negotiations with his opposition counterparts, Prime
Minister Justin Trudeau will fire up his webcam to join his Liberal colleagues at their weekly virtual caucus confab before heading to the House of Commons to field questions from across the aisle. (2 PM)
Given the timing, he’ll likely be looking for any opportunity to put
Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole on the defensive over Saskatchewan backbench MP
Cathay Wagantall’s proposal to effectively criminalize sex-selective abortions by making it an offence for a medical practitioner to perform the procedure if they know that it is being sought “solely on the grounds of the child’s genetic sex.” which will hit the House floor for its first hour of debate this afternoon.

After launching his opening bid to secure cross-aisle support for his government’s upcoming budget yesterday,
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to wrap up his first round of closed-door negotiations with his opposition counterparts this afternoon with back-to-back têtes-à-tête with
New Democrat Leader Jagmeet Singh and
Green Party Leader Annamie Paul. (3:30 PM/4 PM)
Under the current minority mathematics, the Liberals need at least one other party to back their proposed fiscal to-do list for the coming year which, it’s worth noting, was initially expected to be framed as a post-pandemic recovery plan, but has likely been rejigged to address the ongoing third wave of outbreaks as well.
With just one week to go until his minority government unveils its first full budget in nearly two years,
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will soon find out just what it will take to secure the support of at least one other party as he heads into preliminary negotiations with his cross-aisle counterparts.
According to his official itinerary, Trudeau has scheduled closed-door têtes-à-tête with
Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole (11:45 AM) and
Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François (3:15 PM), respectively, with similar sessions with
New Democrat Leader Jagmeet Singh and
Green Party Leader Annamie Paul likely to follow within the next few days.
