The Association of Salaried Medical Specialists (ASMS) union represents senior doctors who work in the country s hospitals.
Executive director Sarah Dalton said Counties Manukau DHB needed to receive more funding to address its surgery backlog, and there also needed to be the people available to carry out the operations. There s a limit to how many weekends doctors, anaesthetists and nurses are going to be willing to work in the face of being abandoned by the government, she said. There s been a real loss of goodwill [due to the pay freeze] and I don t think it s just doctors that are affected, a lot of nurses will be voting with their feet on this one.

Northland health workers are considering strike action following recent Government announcements around pay for those working in the public sector. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern recently met with Public Sector Association representatives to discuss the announcements and called the conversations constructive . Both sides have since acknowledged the announcements were not a freeze on wages, but rather an opening position for collective bargaining negotiations.

OPINION:
I am an Auckland-based registered nurse working with older adults. I ve been in the same role in the same ward for the past 20 years. I know and love my patients and I like to think that s mutual.
Having the chance to help people, especially older adults, is why I became a nurse. I love that I make a difference in people s lives, but right now I m feeling pretty flat, demoralised and let down – and so are most of my colleagues across the country.

Vera Ellen with Lieutenant Colonel Maree Sheard, then director of nursing services for the Defence Force, when Ellen received the New Zealand Defence Service Medal for non-operational service, at Parliament House in 2011. Her mother, Edna, came to New Zealand on a scheme to bring young women to the colonies, and married John Thomas Jabez Ellen. Ellen was born in the Te Puni Street Nursing Home, Petone. Life was tough for her family in the Depression, and she would later talk about the help received from the Salvation Army.
