If Warriors players were forced to pay more tax by being based in Australia, they would have been able to ask the club for more money.
The Warriors have been saved from having to pay out $5.5 million in taxes thanks to the latest Australian federal budget. Because the club’s players and staff have been based in Australia for longer than an 183-day threshold, they became liable to pay tax in that country at the highest rate. Legally, players and staff would then have been able to claim that money back from the Warriors, which would have not only had a huge impact on the club’s finances, but would also get the club into salary cap problems.

New Zealand Breakers couldn’t replicate their upset win over Perth Wildcats a week previous, as their Australian National Basketball League playoff hopes took a further hefty jolt on Sunday. The Wildcats pulled away for a 98-84 victory at Perth’s RAC Arena, leaving the Breakers 9-18 and almost certain to miss the post-season. They travelled to Perth knowing they needed to win all their remaining 10 games to maintain a slim chance of reaching the playoffs, as they eye a run of seven straight at home starting in Auckland on May 20.
Former Boomers coach and three-time NBL title winner Andrej Lemanis will leave his post at Brisbane at the end of the season to coach in Japan.
Lemanis, who coached the Boomers for seven years and won three NBL crowns with the New Zealand Breakers, announced on Wednesday the 2021 season would be his last after five years at the Bullets.
The club had been in discussions with Lemanis since January and is already in the process of replacing him.

Behind Tyler Harvey s masterclass, the Illawarra Hawks snapped a three-game losing skid and kept their NBL finals hopes alive after grinding past the New Zealand Breakers 75-67 at the Silverdome in Launceston.
Star point guard Harvey (29 points, seven steals) enjoyed a blinding first half on Monday night, single-handedly keeping the fifth-placed Hawks in the contest before restamping his authority in a lopsided fourth quarter.
Thanks to Harvey s brilliance and some stifling team defence, Illawarra completely blanketed NZ 23-4 either side of three-quarter-time to transform a 49-55 deficit into a match-winning 72-59 advantage.
