Govt calls an enquiry to relook at New Zealand s immigration settings Monday, May 3, 2021 Sandeep Singh The government has asked the Productivity Commission to inquire into immigration settings and recommend what changes are required to meet the future needs of New Zealand economy and society. The office of the Productivity Commission confirmed this in a press release this morning. “The Government has requested the Productivity Commission Te Komihana What Hua o Aoteroa to inquire into what working-age immigration policy settings would best facilitate New Zealand’s long-term economic growth and promote the wellbeing of New Zealanders,” the press release said. Earlier Productivity Commission had received a term of reference on April 12 from Deputy Prime Minister & Minister of Finance Grant Robertson providing a broad context and the guidelines of what to enquire and what to exclude from the enquiry around general immigration settings.

New report calls into question benefits of RSE scheme Newshub 2 hrs ago James Fyfe © Getty The scheme allows employers in the horticulture industry to give seasonal jobs to workers from nine Pacific countries A new report looking at the benefits of New Zealand s seasonal migrant schemes in the horticulture industry has found little good evidence recent large increases in temporary workers have boosted long-term productivity for the sector. The report by the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research (NZIER) examined the effect of increased temporary migration to New Zealand on the industry.  It concluded that while there were some positive impacts from the recognised seasonal employer (RSE) programme, claims the RSE scheme constitutes an unquestioned triple win for the workers, their employers and the New Zealand economy as a whole are hard to support based on the evidence collected to date .
