The Government’s proposed investment in Northland, which includes a new spur line to link Northport to the existing rail network, is great news, KiwiRail Group Chief Executive Greg Miller says.
Today the Government announced funding to build a 19km rail line between Whangārei and Northport and to upgrade the rail line north of Whangārei to handle heavy freight trains as part of its updated commitment to transport infrastructure projects through the New Zealand Upgrade Programme.
“A stand-alone structure is the safest option that will not only provide a walking and cycling option for commuters but creates an outstanding piece of tourism infrastructure,” said Wood. “Major international cities all around the world have similar connections and we’ve all seen how well used the (cycleway) Te Ara I Whiti - Lightpath has become, with the Northern Pathway having the potential to be a bigger tourist drawcard,” said Wood.

A new Northern Pathway gets green light, which will finally allow walkers and cyclists to cross the Auckland Harbour. The minister said an interim solution might involve ideas such as cycling access to the Harbour Bridge on Sundays.
The government has taken the next step to boost regional economic recovery with the establishment of the new fund to replace the Provincial Growth Fund.
