There will be 56 more affordable rental homes coming to various communities throughout the West Kootenay.
“People across the Kootenays know how important housing is to their own, their neighbours’, and their community’s wellbeing,” said Katrine Conroy, Kootenay-West MLA. “Communities big and small have been feeling the housing crunch for years, and it’s great to see organizations in Fruitvale, Slocan, and New Denver working in partnership with our government to create much-needed homes.”
“For people living in small towns, safe, affordable, and accessible housing can be hard to come by,” said Brittny Anderson, Nelson-Creston MLA. “I couldn’t be happier to announce the partnership between the Kaslo Housing Society and the province to create ten new homes for people from all walks of life, and am so grateful to the Society for their work.”
NDP MLA Katrine Conroy says 46 new, affordable rental homes are coming to West Kootenays for people with low to moderate incomes. “People across the Kootenays know how important housing is to their own, their neighbours’, and their community’s wellbeing,” said MLA Conroy.

The City of Castlegar has now been officially named the tenth community in the province to obtain Bear Smart status by the B.C. Conservation Officers Service.
“It is great to see the City of Castlegar and, more importantly, our residents get recognized as a Bear Smart community,” said Kirk Duff, Castlegar Mayor. “This accomplishment is possible because of a collective effort by our community to change everyday habits and activities relating to things such as garbage and fruit trees to reduce conflicts with bears in Castlegar.”
The Bear Smart Community Program is a voluntary, preventative conservation measure that supports individuals, businesses, and communities to reduce conflicts with bears.
