The city of New Braunfels established a warming center Wednesday afternoon.
Continued winter weather combined with ongoing electric outages prompted the city officials to open the New Braunfels Civic and Convention Center, located at 375 S. Castell Ave., for those without power, stranded motorists and anyone in need of electricity.
The warming center was expected to open at 4 p.m. and is accessible to anyone, free of charge, and would remain operational until winter weather improves and rotating power outages are no longer necessary.
However, city officials said space would be limited due to COVID-19 protocols.
The entrance to the warming center will be from the Castell Avenue side of the facility.

The line of cars with people waiting for assistance at the New Braunfels Food Bank goes out of the parking lot and into the street, even on a weekday afternoon.
âItâs been all the way to the street consistently for the last few weeks,â said Monica Borrego, the food bankâs executive director. âWe thought it would go down a little bit after Thanksgiving, but it hasnât. Thereâs just been so much need in the community. People are here asking for help.â
The demand in the community for assistance resulting from the impact of the coronavirus continues to skyrocket.

The annual Gruene Music & Wine Festival typically takes place over four days in the Texas Hill Country destination s historical district. Not so this year. The pandemic got in the way. Undaunted, the organizers took it virtual in October and now are revealing that they still raised $82,832.29 for United Way of Comal County. The online fest included a guitar auction, a raffle, guided wine and beer tastings, and naturally, live music. Among the featured performers were Waco-born country artist Wade Bowen and Bret Graham, Gruene Hall s regular emcee.
