New Bedford Whaling Museum Offering a Day of Free Admission
I ve always said that sometimes you need to go on vacation in your backyard. For example, I m one of the biggest history buffs going in my age group. I drag my kids on vacation to Gettysburg, Colonial Williamsburg, and the Reagan Presidential Library. I ve traveled to Stonehenge and to Versailles, but I grew up in the Boston suburbs and never walked the Freedom Trail, visited the Kennedy Library, or visited Paul Revere s house.
I have no explanation. These things are accessible to me virtually every day of my life, but I ve never been there.

I am not an artist. Unless stick figures count as “art” and even then, I’m no Picasso. But I do appreciate art. And finding out that there is a youth showcase of art scheduled on the SouthCoast is exciting.
“Organizing New Bedford: Women Who Mobilized Change” is a new digital exhibit through the New Bedford Whaling Museum that features seven women from “Lighting the Way: Historic Women of the SouthCoast.” According to a recent press release, there has been a call for young artists to use this digital exhibit as inspiration to ignite interest in the impact of women from the region through original art projects.
What s inside the shop
The store opened on Black Friday, this past Thanksgiving, and features products from candles, clothing, glassware to chocolates. The shop prides itself on New Bedford being the “city that lit the world” and is located only a block and a half away from the historic Rodman Candleworks Building.
In response, the store offers candles made in Massachusetts all hand-dipped, poured and dripless. “When I went to the Cape as a kid, and we got saltwater taffy on Cape Cod, I just feel the same connection between the New Bedford Candle Company and coming to New Bedford,” Lanagan said.
