New Bedford City Councilor Hugh Dunn is now facing potential criminal charges in relation to his May 1 multi-vehicle crash in downtown New Bedford.
The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, which was conducting an independent investigation of the incident, said today that an application for a criminal complaint has been made this afternoon to the Clerk Magistrate in New Bedford District Court charging Dunn with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence, leaving the scene of property damage, and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.
Dunn has also been issued a citation for several motor vehicle-related offenses, the D.A.’s Office said.

A special prosecutor is expected to be appointed after authorities say a New Bedford city councilor was operating under the influence during a hit-and-run crash last month.
After gathering all available evidence and interviewing witnesses, authorities issued New Bedford City Councilor Hugh Dunn a citation for several motor vehicle-related offenses in connection with the May 1 crash, the Bristol District Attorney’s Office announced Tuesday.
A Massachusetts State Police detective assigned to the district attorney’s office recently concluded his investigation into the multi-vehicle crash, according to prosecutors.
If the district clerk magistrate finds probable cause for the offenses, Dunn will be formally charged with leaving the scene and driving while under the influence.
NEW BEDFORD The portrait of retired presiding New Bedford District Court Judge Bernadette L. Sabra now hangs in the courthouse.
But it did seem at times as if the ceremony to honor the judge, held earlier this month in the main courtroom, might never be held because of the pandemic.
The portrait, which was done by Cantin Photography of Tiverton, Rhode Island, was finished late last year and remained in the judge’s home for about six months until it was safe to hold the ceremony.
Sabra joked that the thought of coming into court in the middle of the night and hanging the portrait herself even crossed her mind.
