More Potential New Bedford Mayoral Candidates [OPINION]

More Potential New Bedford Mayoral Candidates [OPINION] Since the end of 2020, there has been tremendous speculation that New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell would be leaving for a position in the Biden Administration. The speculation was reinforced when the mayor confirmed that he has been in contact with the Biden-Harris transition team. In fact, the mayor has twice confirmed it to WBSM talk host Barry Richard on-air. The process dictates the president of the city council is elevated to acting mayor and then there is a special election. Given the rarity of this situation, it is likely there will be at least a dozen candidates and that will trigger a preliminary election followed by the general between the top two finalists.

New Bedford s Other Possible Mayoral Candidates [OPINION]

As the speculation continues about New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell leaving early to join the Biden Administration, the list of potential mayoral candidates grows. Mitchell has confirmed he has been in communication with the Biden-Harris presidential transition team about a position in the new administration. Should Mayor Mitchell leave, there will likely be an enormous number of candidates seeking to fill out the remaining years on his term. The first candidates that come to mind are former Mayor Scott Lang, State Representative Antonio Cabral, City Councilor Linda Morad, and current City Council President Joseph Lopes. I have written previously about this group of standouts, but there are other potential candidates, too.

New Bedford Mayor Downplays Biden Administration Speculation

New Bedford Mayor Downplays Biden Administration Speculation NEW BEDFORD Although the answer seemed far from definitive, New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell downplayed speculation that he is potentially taking a position in the incoming Biden Administration on WBSM Wednesday. “There’s always chatter in these types of things, not to fuel speculation,” Mitchell said. “But the people should know I’m focused on the job (of mayor) right now.” In his weekly appearance on Barry Richard’s program, after discussing how the COVID-19 vaccine was rolling out in New Bedford, Richard wrapped up the conversation by asking Mitchell if he had been having conversations with anyone in President-Elect Joe Biden’s camp, or perhaps had even sent down resumé to Washington, D.C. after speculation that he might be in line for a position in the incoming administration.
