There would be no American music as we know it without the contributions of Black artists. Since the first African music was brought over by people in bondage as early as the 15th century, Black singers and musicians have had a hand in every aspect of American music s evolution. From country-western, the foundation of which was banjo music from Africa, to rock n roll, first played by a Black woman on electric guitar in 1938, each genre of American music has a Black artist (or many) who helped create it.

YOUNGSTOWN Systemic racism and the continued unjustified killing of black men by white police officers still tear at the fabric of society, but the difference people of goodwill can make begins with speaking against both, several students say.
“When you see a wrongdoing and do nothing about it, you’re being a silent witness,” Lekeila Houser, a Youngstown State University senior and Mahoning Valley Sojourn to the Past member, said. “These men were wrongfully killed by those who are supposed to protect us.”

YOUNGSTOWN As difficult as this year’s major upheavals and challenges continue to be for millions, they also should be used to underscore the importance of people unifying with one another, a longtime religious leader contends.
“The George Floyd death awakened us and taught us we need to be united in our fight” against systemic racism and for freedom and greater equality, the Rev. Kenneth L. Simon, pastor of New Bethel Baptist Church, said.
Simon delivered his remarks during a mostly virtual Kwanzaa kickoff celebration Saturday evening at the church, 1507 Hillman St., on the South Side. Because of the ongoing health pandemic, the one-hour event also was livestreamed on Facebook.
Girard police Chief John Norman looks at body camera footage from one of his police officers on Wednesday. Girard has had the devices for its 24 officers since February 2019. The city paid $12,000 for the cameras and data storage.
WARREN The Warren Police Department will be purchasing four body cameras that will be worn by officers patrolling city streets.
Other Valley departments, such as Girard, Niles and the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Department, also are using cameras worn by their officers.
The idea of these cameras is endorsed by Valley community activists, including pastors, civil rights leaders, mayors and law enforcement.
The Warren cameras are expected to be assigned to police cars, so they will be spread among multiple officers on any given day.
