New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) has undertaken various development works, including modernising three of its gates and providing a dedicated gate for handling cruise passengers.
Speaking after hoisting the National Flag during the Republic Day celebrations at NMPT, Chairman A.V. Ramana said that the three gates, U. Srinivas Mallya, K.K. Gate and S.J. Gate, were being modernised. The port will also provide a dedicated gate for the movement of cruise passengers, he said.
The imminent transition of 11 of the 12 ports owned by the Central government and run as ‘trusts’ into ‘authorities’ will clear the decks for the biggest privatisation of cargo handling terminals operated by the State itself. This is because the ‘port authority’ formed under the proposed Major Port Authorities Bill (awaiting Rajya Sabha nod) .
Mangaluru City Corporation decides to seek land for drinking water

Mangaluru, Jan 1: The city corporation, at its general session held here on Thursday December 31 that was presided over by mayor Diwakar, decided to seek ten acres of land for supplying drinking water from the new dam at Adyar.
A new dam is being constructed downstream of the new dam at Thumbe. This will help augmentation of water storage between the two dams at Thumbe and Adyar. In order to create infrastructure needed to supply water from here to the city, city mayor Diwakar has written to Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner, seeking to hand over ten acres of land that is currently available at Adyar, to the city corporation. This was stated by whip, Premananda Shetty.

Commissioner of Mangaluru City Corporation Akshy Sridhar said here on Thursday that the civic body will remove after January 6 such cables (not electricity lines) of various service providers drawn through electricity poles on the roadside and on medians that are posing a danger to people.
He told the council of the corporation in its meeting that the service providers should remove such hanging cables posing danger to pedestrians and vehicles, on their own by January 6. If not, the civic body will jump into action.
