ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. The state Attorney General’s Office is accusing a New Mexico-based company of taking advantage of Philippine teachers it’s bringing to the U.S.
On Tuesday the AG’s Office filed a lawsuit in 2nd Judicial District Court in Albuquerque against Total Teaching Solutions International and CEO Janice Bickert alleging violations of the state Unfair Practices Act by charging nearly four times what similar companies charge and for misleading teachers about its ability to obtain proper work visas.
According to the lawsuit, clients who don’t pay monthly fees are threatened with legal action and being reported to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Medical Marijuana for Incarcerated Patients
A New Mexico judge has ruled in favor of incarcerated persons who are medical marijuana card holders such that they can use their medicine while in prison. District Court Judge Lucy Solimon has now set precedent for medical care for those in jail or prison or on probation on the heels of reported incidents of correctional officers confiscating medical cannabis products from patients.
This most recent case follows Joe Montaño who was the unlucky victim of a correctional officer confiscating his medical marijuana while Joe was serving a ninety-day sentence of home confinement. New Mexico’s Lynn and Erin Compassionate Use Act (2019) allows for medical cannabis to be administered by patients who are on parole or probation.

As Grant County and most of the rest of New Mexico transitioned to the red stage of reopening Wednesday, most small businesses were allowed to expand their services beyond curbside following a two-week “reset” that shuttered many shops.
In the red level of Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s reopening plan, “nonessential” businesses, such as gyms, hair salons, places of worship and retail stores, can again open their doors at 25 percent of their maximum capacity. Restaurants can also serve customers on patios again, also at 25 percent capacity. Indoor dining is still not allowed.

It was a year chock-full of being inventive for Kirk Matthews.
The New Mexico-based musician, like many others, had his livelihood interrupted in March when the pandemic nixed live shows.
Yet he continued on.

“This year has been good one day and bad the next,” Matthews says. “I’m trying to keep busy, just like everyone else has.”
At the beginning of the pandemic, Matthews was in the interim stages of preproduction on his new record, “The Color of Rust.”
