SILVER CITY, N.M. – More than 350 students earned degrees from Western New Mexico University in spring 2021, and the Mustang community celebrated through a hybrid commencement ceremony on Friday afternoon.
Of the graduates who received diplomas from WNMU this spring, about 250 chose to participate in the commencement ceremony, with 150 walking in person at Ben Altamirano Stadium and 97 turning their tassels over Zoom.
The university awarded 37 associate degrees, 121 bachelor’s degrees, 152 master’s degrees, 68 graduate certificates, 10 applied technology certificates, six fast-track certificates, and five high school equivalency diplomas.
Recognized as new inductees in the WNMU Student Hall of Fame were Taylor Allison, Kelli McGhiey, Harry O’Callaghan, Samantha Starr-Sullenger and Laruni Witty.

This little one got a little extra surprise Friday just before the Western New Mexico University commencement ceremonies at Ben Altamirano Field as he got a high-five from Rawhide, the WNMU mascot. More than 350 students graduated this spring, with 150 choosing to participate in person and about 100 choosing to stay remote during the hybrid ceremony.

Governor Declares May 4 College And Career Signing Day

SANTA FE – The New Mexico Higher Education Department (NMHED), Public Education Department and College Connect New Mexico will celebrate students who have decided to continue their education beyond high school during New Mexico College and Career Signing Day today, May 4.
High school seniors and other college-bound New Mexicans will be recognized in a video celebration that will stream on the New Mexico Public Education Department’s Facebook page at 3 p.m. May 4. Students and community leaders from across New Mexico submitted photos and videos announcing their college, trade school or training program of choice.

SILVER CITY, N.M. – At Western New Mexico University, the individual members of the spring class of 2021 will get to choose how they celebrate their accomplishment. A hybrid commencement ceremony on Friday, May 7, will give graduates and guests the option of participating virtually or in person.
The outdoor ceremony will take place at Ben Altamirano Stadium, where capacity will be limited. Every graduate who opts to participate in the spring 2021 commencement ceremony in person gets to invite four people to be admitted to the stadium. An e-ticketing system will ensure graduates can provide entry documentation for the family members and friends of their choice.
