Restaurant leaders attribute staffing shortages to unemployment benefits, COVID restrictions

Created: April 19, 2021 06:02 PM ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. Restaurants like D.H. Lescombes Winery and Bistro have been struggling to hire enough staff these days. Some leaders in the restaurant industry said they believe it’s because employees are deciding to stay on unemployment or leave New Mexico altogether.  I ve been in restaurants for 30 years now I ve just never seen nothing quite like this,” said Wayne Moore, director of bistro operations at Lescombes.  Moore said they’re short-staffed at all their locations across New Mexico, mainly because people are choosing to stay on unemployment. However, they’ve also lost some employees to restaurants in other states.

Group defends industry exclusion from Las Cruces plastic bag ban

LAS CRUCES - The leader of an organization which advocates for the state s restaurants defended the exclusion of the industry from Las Cruces proposed ban on single-use plastic bags at businesses, saying the industry is still recovering from the pandemic and plastic bags are easiest for take-out. The Las Cruces City Council on Monday expressed support for an ordinance that bans single-use plastic bags at most retail businesses which would go into effect at the start of the next calendar year. Councilors in favor said it would reduce litter, landfill waste and the introduction of microplastics into the environment.  The city would only ban the thin, plastic carryout bags customers use for groceries and household items when they check out at retail stores which are less than 2.25 mil thick. Laundry bags, bags for newspaper delivery, produce bags, baked good bags and prescription bags would be exempt.

Las Cruces discusses banning single-use plastic bags

The ban would need to be approved by the Las Cruces City Council through an ordinance. Elements of a draft ordinance exist, and the proposed measure would affect places such as gas stations, grocery stores, department stores, home goods stores, hardware stores and pharmacies. The only proposed exceptions so far are food banks, restaurants and take-out food establishments. The city is concerned microplastics bioaccumulate through animal food chains and eventually end up in people s bodies. Councilors expressed concern bags litter nature parks and city streets and a ban would reduce waste in landfills. The city convened a committee, which included the city s Keep Las Cruces Beautiful group, the South Central Solid Waste Authority, local chambers of commerce, local retailers, Las Cruces Public Schools, the New Mexico Restaurant Association and others, in 2019 to draft the potential ordinance.
