Valencia Jaguars finish fourth at state cheer championships

Valencia Jaguars finish fourth at state cheer championships Albuquerque Although fewer people occupied the Pit this year due to capacity restrictions for the New Mexico Activities Association 2021 Spirit Competition, energy was still high as teams from across New Mexico competed for the coveted state championship rings. The cheer and dance state competition, typically held in March and filled to the brim with parents, friends and other spirit supporters saw heavy competition especially in the 5A Cheer and 5A Dance categories. Valencia County high schools may not have taken home any of the large trophies, but they still put their best foot forward after a year of uncertainty due to state regulations surrounding COVID-19.

Shot clock for prep hoops popular with 5A coaches

The boys coaches were in favor of a shot clock by a 15-3 margin, the girls coaches by 15-4. But at the opposite end of the spectrum, the 1A coaches, largely in rural communities, went nearly 180 degrees in the other direction. The 1A boys coaches who responded voted 10-2 against, the girls coaches 11-4 against. A total of 164 boys and girls coaches took part in the straw poll, or about 53 percent of all basketball coaches in New Mexico. There are just over 310 combined boys and girls programs, and the two largest classes (by number of schools) are 1A (42) and 2A (30).

.... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... .... Spring-sport athletes in Albuquerque Public Schools may decline to be tested for COVID-19 without fear of having their playing privileges stripped from them. That was the message Thursday from APS Superintendent Scott Elder in a letter he sent to principals and athletic directors of the district’s 13 high schools, informing them of APS’ abrupt change in policy. “While we are within our rights to require testing, it wasn’t the state’s intent to penalize students who choose not to be tested,” Elder wrote in the letter obtained by the Journal. He also cited some public outcry as reason for the change.
