How would making NMSU Carlsbad a community college affect the city?

In 1960, the Carlsbad community and New Mexico State University partnered to establish a branch of the university in the growing southeast New Mexico city. During that time, New Mexico State University Carlsbad served to bolster the local economy, now employing over 100 people, and providing degrees and certifications to students that aligned best with local industry. Similarly, NMSU benefited from the arrangement, as the branch campus provided a stepping stone for students seeking a four-year degree from the main campus in Las Cruces. Now, that relationship appears fractured and Carlsbad leaders say no longer benefits staff, students and the community. The New Mexico Legislature is considering a pair of bills which would provide a framework to sever from the NMSU system and transition to an independent community college.

New Mexico Senate OKs bill to make NMSU Carlsbad independent college

Senate Bill 236, a bill which creates a platform for the transition of New Mexico State University Carlsbad to an independent college, passed the New Mexico Senate by a vote of 39 to 2 on March 8. Titled Independent Carlsbad Community College the bill was introduced by Sen. Gay Kernan (D42), and received extended debate on the Senate floor prior to passage. One thing you have to understand about becoming independent there is no additional cost to the state and would in no way add an additional college because it would simply be changing from a branch college to an independent college, Kernan said in her introduction of the bill.
