Summer, for most, usually includes a vacation, time off from school and some fun in the sun. Our Las Cruces Public Schools students and staff have certainly earned a break from the challenges brought forth by more than a year of remote learning, followed by strict guidelines when we returned to the classroom earlier this semester. As we wrap up this school year, many of our students and staff will be using some time over the break to catch up or strengthen certain skills with Extended Learning Time.

LAS CRUCES - Internships are a requirement for some degree programs at New Mexico State University, and with COVID-19 restrictions in place since March 2020, a student’s graduation plans could have been derailed without a timely internship placement. But NMSU’s Education Abroad helped a group of students fulfill their requirement with virtual international internships.
In fall 2020, NMSU’s Education Abroad began offering virtual international experiences, and Program Manager Erica Nikolaisen said they plan to continue to offer these options.
Anne Hubbell, Department of Communication Studies professor and Honors College associate dean, contacted the Education Abroad staff when she realized students in the department were having trouble finding internships. The result led to placements from the University Studies Abroad Consortium.
The “Spring Into STEM” online events include bi-monthly Zumba sessions, and sessions where children can engage in activities led by professionals in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
“With parks, museums and more being closed due to COVID-19, it is still important to provide STEM education and educational services to the students in our Southern New Mexico school districts,” said Laura Martinez, project lead for Spring Into STEM. “Participants have had the opportunity to meet a variety of excellent professionals, from chemists and biologists to astronomers and engineers.”
On Mother’s Day weekend, the STEM Outreach Center offered a “STEMother’s Day” event in partnership with the Sunspot Solar Observatory. The online event attracted more than 70 participants who learned about the science of sunlight and engaged in a fun activity with free materials.
