NIH awards $888,000 grant to NMSU researchers studying heart attacks Carlos Andres López LAS CRUCES - Every year, an estimated 805,000 Americans have a heart attack – that’s one every 40 seconds, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.   But not all heart attacks are the same, and the development of better treatment approaches requires understanding the distinction between heart attacks that result from blood clots after a plaque rupture and those that do not.  Research now underway at New Mexico State University seeks to advance the understanding of what causes heart attacks and differentiate between heart attack types at a molecular level.

NMSU finalizes budget cuts resulting in 57 positions being eliminated LAS CRUCES – New Mexico State University may have to cut about $11 million for the fiscal year 2021, resulting in 57 positions being eliminated. University administrators President John Floros, Senior Vice President for Administration and Finance Andy Burke and Vice President for Student Success Renay Scott laid out the cuts in a virtual town hall Tuesday. The cuts necessary after the COVID-19 pandemic took a toll on the economy  are less than what was expected months ago, administrators said. The university enacted a hiring freeze and launched a voluntary retirement program last year that was meant to keep layoffs at a minimum.

BAMC honors WWII soldiers through Bataan Death March remembrance

Earlier this month, soldiers currently assigned to Brooke Army Medical Center s Soldier Recovery Unit organized and participated in the Bataan Death March remembrance event on Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston. The intent was to recreate – virtually – the Bataan Death March remembrance event that is normally held in New Mexico, said Army Staff Sgt. Edward Nelan, a veteran-track squad leader in BAMC s SRU. Nelan served as the lead coordinator and non-commissioned officer in charge of the event. We have 33 personnel from the SRU who volunteered to be part of the march and we have participants from outside the SRU. BAMC s virtual commemorative march was part of the national march. The Army Reserve Officer Training Corps department at New Mexico State University began the event in 1989 in White Sands, New Mexico according to the Bataan Memorial Death March site. Las Cruces turns out for Walking With Herb world premiere Leah Romero, Las Cruces Sun-News LAS CRUCES – Walking With Herb is now on the big screen.  The Las Cruces movie, years in the making, was shown for a large audience for the first time Thursday with a red carpet premiere at Amador Live. “Walking with Herb  filmed in Las Cruces in 2018 is based off the 2015 novel of the same name by Joe Bullock, of First American Bank in Las Cruces. The book was adapted into a screenplay by the late Tony Award winner Mark Medoff, also a longtime New Mexico State University professor, and was directed by Medoff s son-in-law Ross Marks, the executive director of the Las Cruces International Film Festival and NMSU professor.
