These numbers, taken from a new study co-authored by a New Mexico State University researcher and 17 other scientists from across the U.S., show the promise of increased nursery output as a way to fight climate change, create jobs, and recover from uncharacteristically severe wildfires.
The STEM Outreach Center at New Mexico State University intends to apply for a five-year grant to continue and extend support for school districts in Doña Ana County, Grant County and Hidalgo County beginning in the fall.
The Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Center grant would support the development of after-school programs in Las Cruces, Hatch, Gadsden, Silver City, Cobre and Lordsburg school districts. These programs provide academic support and enrichment opportunities to support literacy and science, technology, engineering and math learning designed to reinforce topics introduced during the students traditional learning day.
The grant is offered to high need schools through the New Mexico Public Education Department through the national 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program. • Mar 4, 2021 Las Cruces Utilities (LCU) Intern Isuru Abeysiriwardana has spent most of his career in academics and hopes to continue doing research in environmental engineering. However, Abeysiriwardana is spending some time getting real-life field exposure thanks to a collaboration between LCU and New Mexico State University (NMSU).
Since January 2021, Abeysiriwardana, an NMSU Ph.D. student, has seen and helped with the inner workings of project management, design, and planning, under the guidance of LCU Senior Engineer Waleed Abu-Issa, P.E.
“It’s one thing to know how to design something, but to see the actual structure you’re designing, to walk around it and talk to the operators who use it every day, it helps inform how the end plans are integrated for the benefit of all of its uses and users,” Abu-Issa said.
