An overnight success? Hardly. Her first venture failed miserably.
“We were broke at the end of it,” the Gallup Democrat, now 60, recalled in a recent interview. “We had to close up shop two weeks early.”
But the experience operating a concession stand at the government-owned swimming pool in the village of Milan, where she grew up proved valuable for the ambitious self-starter. Looking back, she said it offered lessons that helped shape her.

The Sandoval Extension Master Gardeners is now accepting applications for the 2021 Master Gardener Program, which will be conducted partially online this year.
The program begins Feb. 2 and is scheduled to run 15 weeks. Classes will be conducted on Zoom and will constitute a college class on gardening in the High Desert climates of Sandoval County.
The program includes classes taught by area specialists and New Mexico State University professors. Some of the topics to be covered include: permaculture and sustainability; plant identification; fruit and vegetable production; tree selection and care ; and pest management. The program is open to all metropolitan area residents.

Vaccination clinics scheduled for hundreds of public school employees throughout Albuquerque and surrounding communities won t happen after all.
New Mexico health officials say the state is focusing the current round of vaccinations on people age 75 and older and those who have underlying medical conditions that put them at risk from COVID-19.
But news of the scuttled clinics angered one state senator and left school administrators with two of the state s largest districts extremely disappointed.
Republican Sen. Craig Brandt of Rio Rancho said the Health Department s actions demonstrate a callous disregard for families and teachers in his district.
The Health Department did not immediately answer questions about why the clinics were allowed to be organized in the first place, but Health Secretary Dr. Tracie Collins on Friday again spelled out the groups of people who are eligible for shots.
