Update On Traffic Stop Where NMSP Officer Was Killed

This update identifies the officers involved and gives additional details leading up to the shooting.
LUNA COUNTY – New Mexico State Police (NMSP) Ofc. Darian Jarrott initiated a traffic stop on a white Chevrolet pickup Feb. 4, on Interstate 10 eastbound, near mile marker 102 east of Deming.
During the traffic stop, Ofc. Jarrott asked the driver, identified as Omar Felix Cueva, 39, of Deming to exit the vehicle.
Cueva exited the driver’s side holding an AR-15 style rifle and fired at least one shot at Ofc. Jarrott as he was walking to the rear of the vehicle. Ofc. Jarrott ducked and fell onto his back as Cueva ran around the back of the pickup toward Ofc. Jarrott.

Chamita, NM – On March 11, 2021, at approximately 12:10 a.m., the New Mexico State Police Uniform Bureau in Espanola was dispatched to County Road 56 in Chamita, New Mexico, in reference to a shot’s fired call.
When officers arrived on County Road 56, they observed three victims with gunshot wounds, and a tan Chevrolet Tahoe parked approximately forty yards from County Road 56 House 89.
During the investigation, officers learned that the occupants in the Tahoe were traveling on County Road 56 when the driver of the Tahoe pulled into the property of County Road 56 House 89 in Chamita. Two of the victims went into the residence to purchase methamphetamine from the homeowner, identified as Andrew Valdez, 50. While in the residence the two victims got into an altercation with Valdez who assaulted them with a knife.

Los Lunas, NM -On Monday, April 5, 2021, around 5:00 p.m., the Valencia County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to 4235 State Road 314 in Los Lunas, for a domestic violence call.
When deputies arrived on scene, they located a female with a gunshot wound and a deceased male victim on the property. The female was transported to a hospital in Albuquerque where she is being treated for her injuries. The male victim was pronounced deceased on scene by the Office of the Medical Investigators. The male victim was later identified as Tyler East (30).
The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau was called to investigate this homicide. State Police agents learned that East and his girlfriend were having a domestic dispute. During the dispute, East brandished a weapon, shot his girlfriend, and then dragged her out of the residence. While outside, East was shot by a male subject who was at the residence. East
One Dead, Three Injured After Shooting In Rio Arriba County

CHAMITA – At approximately 12:10 a.m. today, the New Mexico State Police (NMSP) Uniform Bureau in Espanola was dispatched to County Road 56 in Chamita in reference to a shots fired call.
When officers arrived on County Road 56, they observed multiple victims with gunshot wounds. Officers observed a tan Chevrolet Tahoe parked approximately 40 yards from County Road 56 House 89A.
During the investigation, officers learned that the occupants in the Tahoe were traveling on County Road 56 when the driver of the Tahoe pulled into the property of County Road 56 House 89A in Chamita. Occupants of the residence told the individuals in the Tahoe, “to get out of the property” and then began shooting towards the Tahoe. The driver of the Tahoe drove through a fence coming to rest on an adjoining property.
