High School senior shares impact of school shutting down due to COVID-19 cases     ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (KOAT) A student at Eldorado High called the school’s forced closure due to COVID-19 cases a “big disappointment.” Eldorado High is the first public school in the state that’s been forced to close after more than 10 students and faculty tested positive. “I think a lot of people are missing out,” said Joseph Leyba, a senior at Eldorado High. “I think I’m one of them.” A senior year that’s anything but normal. Joseph Leyba plays on the football team at Eldorado High. Their season took place in the spring, not fall and instead of a crowd of fans, there were near-empty stands. Now one week after the school is finally back open, the state shut it down.

Governor Signs Bills Benefiting Students, Higher Education STATE News: SANTA FE Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has signed several budget and policy measures that will benefit higher education students, support workforce development, and fund key initiatives at public and Tribal colleges and universities across New Mexico.   A top administrative priority, the New Mexico Opportunity Scholarship will receive $18 million to support part-time and non-traditional students as well as recent high school graduates in pursuing certificate, associate, and bachelor’s degrees at public and Tribal colleges and universities in New Mexico. The scholarship was originally established in 2020, but was limited to students attending full-time and pursuing two-year degrees.

New Mexico Students Offered Surveillance Testing For COVID … Goal To Test 1% Per Week On Voluntary Basis PED News: SANTA FE – The New Mexico Public Education Department (PED) has announced that New Mexico public school students will be offered school-based COVID-19 testing opportunities as a further tool to enhance safety amid the continuing pandemic. Student testing is completely voluntary and at no cost to students. Districts and charter schools will implement student testing programs as soon as possible but no later than the week of April 26. Students who show proof of being fully vaccinated and students who have tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 90 days will not be asked to participate.

New Mexico public education leaders praise transition to in-person learning in Las Cruces LAS CRUCES, New Mexico In their visit to a Las Cruces elementary school on Friday, leaders with the New Mexico Public Education Department praised the transition to in-person instruction at Las Cruces Public Schools. Deputy secretaries Tim Hand and Gwendolyn Perea Warniment visited Valley View Elementary, along with State Sen. William Soules, a democrat who represents Doña Ana County. The kids are the barometer, said Timothy Hand, deputy secretary of the Public Education Department. When you re talking with the kids and seeing the expression of relief and gratitude on their faces, all signs are pointing up.
