After 58 years operating off the Hudson River in Buchanan, New York, the final nuclear unit at Indian Point closes on Friday at 11 p.m.
Some environmentalists celebrated the closure, arguing the plant’s proximity to New York City makes it unsafe and that climate change can be tackled without this atomic brand of carbon-free electricity source. But its closure has sinister immediate implications: climate change-causing fossil fuels will likely replace that nuclear energy in the near term.
Already, gas-fired generators powered 40% of the state’s power last year, up from 36% the year prior, as a result of Unit 2’s closure, the NY Times reported. That will continue until more renewable projects and energy efficiency measures can get up and running.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that the aging and long-troubled Indian Point nuclear power plant on the eastern shore of the Hudson River in Westchester County will be closed, as planned, on Friday, April 30. The 2,000-megawatt nuclear power plant, located 24 miles north of New York City, had presented numerous threats to the safety of over 19 million people who live or work in the New York metropolitan area and its environmental health. Since my time as Attorney General, I have been deeply concerned with the safety of the Indian Point nuclear power facility. It does not belong on the Hudson River and in close proximity to the most densely populated area in the country, Governor Cuomo said. After years of relentless work together with federal, state, and local officials, we found a path to safely and responsibly close
The Indian Point nuclear power plant in New York will permanently shut down during the evening of April 30 when the 1,041-MW Unit 3 will power down, removing capacity that is likely to be replaced by natural gas-fired generation during higher load periods.

Register Now The Indian Point shutdown has been anticipated for some time and we expect few immediate price impacts in the shoulder months, Kieran Kemmerer, power market analyst with S&P Global Platts Analytics, said in an email. During periods of higher load, we anticipate the nuclear generation to be replaced by gas-fired generation in the region running at higher capacity factors. Additionally, exports to New England from downstate New York are likely to fall as more New York generation flows south into load centers.
