Far-left Democrat Andrew Yang filed formal paperwork on Dec. 23 that could see him run for mayor in New York City, according to the New York City Campaign Finance Board.
Yang ran for president in 2020 in a crowded field of more than 20 Democrats. He quit the race in February and endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden in March.
The 45-year-old ran on a promise to enact “universal basic income,” a wealth redistribution scheme in which the government would dole out $1,000 checks to each person in the United States aged 18 and older. Yang argued the scheme was necessary to counteract the advent of automation.

Andrew Yang isn’t just the newest addition to the Democratic primary field in the race for mayor of New York City – he’s a new addition to city politics and government, whose experience doesn’t even extend to voting for mayor.

A source close to Yang exclusively told City & State that he plans to file with the New York City Campaign Finance Board this week, formally entering the race for mayor, but declined to comment further. However Yang is not expected to actively raise money or launch his campaign until sometime after January 5, when voting is completed in the U.S. Senate runoff in Georgia. NEW YORK (Reuters) - Andrew Yang, an entrepreneur and former 2020 U.S. presidential contender, has filed papers to run for mayor of New York City as a Democrat in next year s elections, according to the city s Campaign Finance Board.
Yang, who had no background in electoral politics, built an ardent grassroots following in the race to become the Democratic Party s nominee for the presidency with his pledge to create a universal basic income that would pay every American $1,000 a month.
He ended his campaign in February after poor showings in the first two state primary contests in Iowa and New Hampshire.
