HITLAB is excited to announce the HITLAB Breakthrough Alliance (BTA), has named Bill Taranto, president of Merck Global Health Innovation Fund, Chair of the HITLAB Breakthrough Alliance through 2024. The HITLAB Breakthrough Alliance is a membership-based health consortium whose mission is to verify and diffuse digital health innovations through the generation of exclusive, evidence-based research and insights.
BTA evolved from the Digital Health Breakthrough Network (DBHN), which was a five-year partnership between HITLAB and the New York City Economic Development Corporation. DBHN spurred the successful diffusion of such startups as Biotia, KnowNow, Tatch, and Bonbouton. These innovations addressed a range of healthcare needs from motor skills therapies to sleep disorders.
Cruise industry veteran Capt. Tom Spina joined Sea Tow Services International as VP franchise operations.
From working for major cruise companies to navigating the logistics of cargo ships as a marine surveyor, Spina brings 26 years of experience to his new position with the nation’s leading on-water assistance provider.

Previously, Spina served as SVP operations for Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line, director of business development for Carnival Corp. & plc s global port and destination development group and VP port operations, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings. Earlier, he was director of cruise operations for the New York City Economic Development Corp. and a senior marine surveyor for National Cargo Bureau. He also served as a marine inspector for the US Coast Guard.
As part of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s larger plans to revamp the area around Penn Station, a new section of the High Line will connect to Moynihan Train Hall.
The city has issued an RFP seeking developers for a two-acre
affordable housing project on Staten Island’s north shore.
Stapleton Site A is a vacant lot south of Hannah Street that is part of the New Stapleton Waterfront District, a 35-acre decommissioned Navy Base (rendering pictured top via HPD).
The New York City Economic Development Corporation (EDC) is
overseeing the City’s redevelopment of the New Stapleton Waterfront into a
mixed-use neighborhood with housing, waterfront open space and retail and
community facility uses.
It will also include
significant infrastructure improvements such as road reconstruction, bicycle
and walking paths, and better connections to public transit.
