Mendon woman recognized as first bilateral amputee NYC marathoner

Created: July 07, 2021 06:24 PM MENDON, N.Y. (WHEC)   We ve all heard the saying in life: It s a marathon, not a sprint. That certainly was the case for Deb Marcuccilli, 66, a Mendon resident, when she finished the 1994 New York City Marathon in 13 hours and 58 minutes. Twenty-seven years after walking the New York City Marathon on a pair of prosthetic legs, Marcuccili has been recognized by New York Road Runners as the first known bilateral amputee to complete the race.  “It was pretty difficult, but I knew once I reached the 20-mile mark that if I quit, I would come back the next year because that s how I am,” Maruccilli said. “The last six miles were very difficult, but I finished.”
