NYCHA to add more than 4,400 housing units to private management conversion program

More than 9,500 residents live in the developments the agency is adding to its private management program, known as the Permanent Affordability Commitment Together initiative. Repairs will include kitchen and bathroom work, elevator maintenance and renovations to common spaces. The initiative will also address chronic gas and heat outages and include security upgrades. The agency is also accepting RFEIs for the Edenwald Houses in the Bronx, Reid Apartments–Park Rock Consolidated in Brooklyn and Frederick Samuel Apartments in Harlem. There are currently about 26,112 units in some stage of the PACT process, according to NYCHA. NYCHA launched its PACT program in 2016, which ultimately brings developments into the federal Rental Assistance Demonstration and converts them to Section 8 Housing. She reports on the progress toward creating public art and events, and how to get involved. Pier 42 will host temporary art exhibits and community events this summer, while plans for permanent redevelopment proceed. Arriving at Pier 42 for a community volunteer day, I was welcomed to the bustling “Banana Pier” by Hester Street Collaborative’s Dylan House. “People who grew up in the area still call it that because of all the tropical fruits that used to be processed through here,” House says.
