The top Republican in the New York State Senate, Senator Rob Ortt, is calling for the resignation of New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker, after the state attorney general found that his office underreported nursing home COVID-19 deaths.
“The report released today by the Attorney General is confirmation for the thousands of families who lost loved ones to COVID-19 in New York nursing homes, read a statement from Ortt. For months, Governor Cuomo and his administration have refused to be transparent or take any responsibility for actions they have taken during this public health crisis including the deadly March 25, 2020 order to send COVID-positive patients into nursing homes.

The first two US cases of the South African variant of COVID-19 have been found in South Carolina, health officials said Thursday. “The arrival of the SARS-CoV-2 variant in our state is an important reminder to all South Carolinians that the fight against this deadly virus is far from over,” Dr. Brannon Traxler, the interim public health director of the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, said in a release. The virus variant known as the B1351 strain and thought to be more contagious than the UK variant was discovered in a sample tested by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which notified state health officials late Wednesday. The state health department also discovered the virus in a second sample earlier in the week. Both of the patients are adults one from the state’s Lowcountry region and one from the Pee Dee region, according to officials. It

NEW YORK (WWNY) - A larger number of New York nursing home residents may have died from COVID-19 than previously reported by the state.
A report out today from state Attorney General Letitia James says the Department of Health may have undercounted those deaths by as much as 50 percent.
The report shows that nursing home residents who were sent to hospitals and died there were not counted among nursing home deaths.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo lied about the number of COVID-19 deaths in nursing homes due to his inadequate leadership and policy that sent infected patients into care facilities during the pandemic.
In a new, lengthy report following months of a highly-anticipated investigation into the deadly neglect, New York state Attorney General Letitia James found that Cuomo, his administration, and the state’s Health Department severely undercounted the number of COVID-related deaths in nursing homes by as much as 50 percent. One example cited in the report shows that a long-term care facility that the state claimed only had 11 deaths from COVID-19 actually lost 40 people to the virus, with more than half occurring at the home.
