New York Gets Offshore Wind Training Institute

January 15, 2021, by Nadja Skopljak The State University of New York (SUNY) and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) have launched the Offshore Wind Training Institute (OWTI). Through a partnership between SUNY’s Farmingdale State College and Stony Brook University, the USD 20 million investment will advance offshore wind training programs and the educational infrastructure needed to establish a workforce that can support the national offshore wind industry. OWTI will certify and train 2,500 New York workers beginning this year to support both offshore and onshore renewable energy projects. Andrew Cuomo made his annual State of the State address recently and announced that in 2021, “New York will continue to build out its nation-leading green economic recovery and accelerate renewable energy development programs. The state will contract with Equinor Wind . for the development of two new offshore wind farms more than 20 miles off the shore of Long Island, in what is the largest procurement of renewable energy by a state in U.S. history. To bolster green economy, New York will build nation s largest offshore wind program

Dive Brief: New York has selected Equinor Wind US to develop a pair of offshore wind facilities capable of generating 2,490 MW of power. The state has a goal of bringing online 9,000 MW of offshore wind by 2035, and the new announcement means there are now plans in place for almost half that target. The state has also issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the development of $5 billion in transmission projects to move renewable energy from the upstate region and Canada, into New York City.
