RENSSELAER, N.Y. â Rich Mooney, a Democrat, has announced he has launched his campaign to become Rensselaerâs next mayor.
Mooney served as the thirty-third mayor of the City of Rensselaer, on Nov. 20, 2018, upon the death of longtime Mayor Daniel J. Dwyer and serving the remainder of Mayor Dwyerâs term until December 2019. Mooney lost to Mike Stammel, a Republican, in the November 2019 mayoral election.
âOur city is at a crossroads â one of going backwards, reversing the strides weâve made to move Rensselaer forward. We cannot afford to further derail our cityâs hopes and vision due to a lack of real leadership in the Mayorâs office,â Mooney said.
Former acting Rensselaer Mayor Rich Mooney is trying to win the job back.
Voters elected Republican Mike Stammel mayor in a November 2019 special election. Mooney had served as Acting Mayor for about a year following the death of then-Democratic Mayor Dan Dwyer. When I was mayor, the city of Rensselaer had momentum building for it, taking off, doing well. And what I see now, looking in, it seems like Rensselaer has just crawled off the tracks. We re at a standstill. Things are stale. We don t have any momentum, no excitement in the city. I wanna change that.
Also a Democrat, Mooney, a former common council president, says he would make the city a cleaner and greener and safer place to live. He says he wants to provide opportunities for new development and growth to expand the tax base.

The silence was deafening, especially since state Democrats seemed to be moving to remove him from office. And there were also reports alleging Cuomo was privately threatening the careers of the Democrats opposing him.
In the two days after the press conference, momentum built for what Fox News Channel anchor Bret Baier described as “a rebellion from fellow Democrats” as they publicly denounced Cuomo, called him out for being a liar, and began moving to strip him of his emergency power and get the pieces in place for an impeachment.
